Preventative Maintenance

January 17, 2019

In summary, pay to maintain your vessel and machinery now, or pay more later. Sounds harsh? Well the reality is, boats and the equipment fitted to them live in a very harsh environment and in the long term cutting corners will cost more.

So the often heard statement, "It's only done 50 hours since last service" isn't necessarily sound logic. Unfortunately the effects of corrosion and condensation continue whilst the boat is tied up at the marina, regardless of hours of use.

The pictures below show a Mercruiser engine that has failed due to water ingress from the exhaust riser and manifold assembly. In this case, delaying spending a few thousand on replacing these items will now cost tens of thousand in replacing the engine.

Ultimately, maintaining your boat and it's equipment in line with recommendations by manufacturer and or experienced professionals should cost you less in the long term and will give you less headaches and more enjoyment on the water
